Best piece of advice I can give: Listen to Chaosnake on this.

Re: New player returning! (Trying a Cube)
I don't think the Chosen have any place in the fomat. Their characteerr base is neither deep enough nor strong enough to successfully draft any kind of army. The breakowns are helpful, thanks! Now that I have a keyboard (originally posted from my phone), some more thoughts: I agree with Chaosnake's reasoning, but not the actual WLs selected. My initial list: Devs: Commander Kaiten (Gotta have the Pally love), Adonis (Illusionist), Ygraine (The original Fighter/Wizard!), Dutchess Brymin (Superfriends flashback! - but actually beacause Seers tend to be teh b0rk3n), Cardinal Creigh (Cantor), Slayer (Classic Dev Mage) Derfs: Thekk Rockbender (Garg love/Cleric), Trespass (Assassin), King Alaric (Big ol' Fighter), Grace Hearthpride (Healing/Rogue/Unstunning), Sigrida Valora (Card Hunt/item tech), Durin Kortouched (More item tech) Elves: Khilkhameth (Druid), Thekem Netheryn (Necro), Laurena Kennet (Bard), Averisk Glyn (Scribe), Cairbre Netheryn (Assassin), Bronwen Tansiq (Combolicious) FreeKs: The Lady of Mercy (Attack, my weenies!), Niobe (Druid/Movement), Sir Robert The Vigilant (Cav leader), Logan Ebonwolfe (Ranged Striker), Keziah Firehair (Bard), Uriel (Celestial, combotastic beatstick of doom) Mercs: Black Tom of Corinth (easier drafting), Caitlyn the Free (The Kabal), Allisara (Summoner), Fasolt (Just plain fun), Kerebrus (Fighter/Cleric), Yedraw (Mentalist?) Throgs: Krenthor Gouge (Barbarian), Syvonne Ashenstorm (Siege), Taoth (War Mage), Uthanak (Leader of Fighters), Grilt Fenstalker (Assassin), Grantuk Rageblade (Ranger) | | | | Chaosnake wrote: I could help getting a card-base together too, providing in-faction, but strong cards for each faction/class. As far as a break down, I would do something like this: Devs: 8 1st level, 8 2nd, 10 3rd, 12 4th, 4 5th Dwarves: 11, 9, 9, 9, 4 (or 3 5th, and Avinoam Blightlifter) Elves: 12, 12, 11, 6, 1 Freeks: 12, 10, 10, 8, 2 Throgs: 12, 11, 10, 7, 2 Mercenaries: 10, 10, 9, 7, 3, 2, 1 The Chosen: 10, 9, 10, 9, 4 | | | | |
The thing that's getting me now is not just this breakdown, but also generating the side-pool of starting lineup characters. I'm trying to get the good lower-level choices into the draft and leave the "backups" as vanilla and/or sub-par as possible. Running everything highlander is making the decision process somewhat harder. Should the side-pool also be highlander? Or is it ok to find 1 or 2 weak starters per faction and just triple up on them?

Re: New player returning! (Trying a Cube)
I don't know if this is true for Warlord, but In MTG I would never put in good cards that were only good with a specific mechanic or keyword. Astral Slide, for example, works off of Cycling cards. It was a very good deck in its day, except in draft the chances of getting enough good cards with the Cycling keyword make it extremely unreliable and therefore, not a good draft strategy. Astral Slide will most likely never be in my Magic Cube. On that same token, I'm not going to include a Warlord just because he/she is a Cantor, a Necromancer, Druid, Assassin or whatever else keyword. It needs to have enough support from cards that are good no matter who is casting them. If I like a Warlord's abilities and he/she also happens to be a Cantor, great. So for example I think Cardinal Creigh is terrible and I don't think I would put him in just because he is a Cantor. Etra most likely doesn't have enough Druid support and will probably come out. Commander Kaiten is ok because most of the better Deverenians are Paladins. Plus he is a Paladin himself so in the very least you'll always have 1 good target for his abilities. That I like. Also, I don't want to include a mercenary warlord that doesn't mitigate loyalty penalties in some way. (Such as Black Tom) Why? Because everyone picks mercenaries. Either you're screwed because everyone else grabbed them, or you grab them all and everyone else is struggling to fill out their decks without having characters suffer a loyalty penalty. I could oly see that working if there were like 5x as many mercs as other factions, and I just don't have the room for that.

I guess Creigh could come out for Madriga. Given that the packs are created by pulling once from each pile, any smart drafter will notice that the mercs are gone as soon as he receives the first pack from the person to his right and start thinking about which faction he wants to pick and will then pull that faction FIRST on the next round. Since characters are the most important resource, they will be drafted first but a pack will contain all the factions so they will be spread around.

Re: New player returning! (Trying a Cube)
So I''m making the final touches on my cube and now I have one problem: I don't actually own any cards!
Can someone recommend me a place to buy singles online for a decent price? What's the best way to begin a collection? Is there a trading forum or place I can buy a collection to start out? I am in the U.S. so not having to ship overseas is preferable, but not necessary.
Thanks!

Re: New player returning! (Trying a Cube)
You might be boned....Your not going to find any large inventories of warlord cards online unless its ebay and that's hit and miss. It's not impossible to find what you seek, but you're going to have to do some digging. I would start by hitting the trade forum and seeing what you can find there. Next step would be to pm Hedge and/or magicsalesman (sp?), they're going to be your best bet for guaranteeing you actually get what your looking for and not just some bundle of cards. After you've acquired what you can from those sources you can put up a thread in the trade forum detailing what your atill lacking. I have a ton of extra epic edition stuff that I might be willing to part with, shoot me a pm if your interested and let me know what your hoping to get.

Re: New player returning! (Trying a Cube)
Well, I think the subclasses should still be used, and I don't think all the mercenaries need to avoid loyalty penalties, for example, I like Bran Segula as a mercenary, because he is strong enough to be run as 6-man. Also, Etra is a druid, and the ability to spend to push someone back would be very powerful in a limited format like this. I think it depends on whether you want a pool of the most powerful cards, or do you want a more balanced and even variety of cards.

Re: New player returning! (Trying a Cube)
Thanks for the tips guys, I'm going to be starting a thread in the Trading section soon. Cube project is still active, help me decide on a few cards! Choose 2 of 3: Ghed Daucet vs. Mother Deiane vs. Cardinal BrominThe Zephyr Armor seems strictly better, but the Vestments are uncommon? Zephyr Armor vs. Blessed VestmentsChoose 2 of 3: Great Cleave, Obliterate, Bear's SoulWhich is better most of the time? Bloodthirsty vs. Scent of BloodHelp me decide: Cure Lethal Wounds vs. Seize LifeChoose 1 of 3: Donatien vs. Cordeos vs. CorsisLastly... Detonate vs. Meteor SwarmThat's all for now, remember though this is a limited environment. Thanks!

Re: New player returning! (Trying a Cube)
For anyone who's interested, check out my trade thread: viewtopic.php?f=3&t=34657It's also inadvertently a list of my Cube in its current incarnation. (I know there will be a lot of changes once I actually test it) Thanks!

Re: New player returning! (Trying a Cube)
Win! Longest post EVAR!!! (for a non-trade thread) Looks good though. No love for Arra'daan? What about the level 4 planar mercs? Antaelus seems like a must have. Zhul, Shadowreaver, Shadow Breath? No Jackals? How about Ogre?

Re: New player returning! (Trying a Cube)
I guess I got so used to 4E that I keep thinking of Planar as a handicap. Zhul is in there though...Antaelus seemed a little OTT though. I set out to equip each faction with a representation of their strengths...for Mercs I always think of funky tech, hence the inclusions of Grihilga, Nactaar, Etal Freste, etc. Devs got their Cavalry, spellcasters, cancellation/redirection. Freeks got their discard-pile tech, weenie rush, and light cav. Elves got ranged strikes, undead/necros and the discard pile. 'Throgs got beatsticks, "pick your posion" tricks, and Seige. Derfs got healing, readying item tech and plenty of gargoyles.
Hopefully I've got the beginnings of a powerful yet balanced environment.

Re: New player returning! (Trying a Cube)
You're going with 55 characters per faction?
