Post First time at Gencon with no main game...
Honestly, I have no clue how to even approach Gencon without playing Warlord. It has ALWAYS been about going for warlord and then just enjoying everything else secondary. Anyone have any suggestions for me as far as a game to take on? Maybe someone who has just gone to Gencon without a "main game" could give me an example of what they do. Thanks all.

Why aren't you playing Warlord? There's a full slate of events :) That said, if you're really itchin' for another game, I like Game of Thrones. If you are looking for a more varied experience, I know that there are some 'regulars' around who only ever did Warlord one day anyway, and might have a better grip on how to GenCon without going for a specific game.

There are Dungeons and Dragons games going daily in the main ball room.

Demos of all kinds going in the dealer's room.

There is a board game and card game library.

Obviously, Warlord is still being played.

The costume contest is wonderful every year. Aside from the typical con sluts that wish they had a talent besides showing off skin, there are some excellent costumes that thought and time are put into each and every year.

St. Elmos.

LARPing all around.

The event catalog is live. I would dig through and find something that meets your fancy. Hope your didn't want True Dungeon though. All those are booked up.

In kinda the same boat. Every convention I've gone to has consisted of sitting in the card hall playing warlord. This year, the only thing I have planned to do is play in the Ascension tournament. And then that's if I can go.

With the number of events that take place at GenCon it's absurd to spend your time playing one single game. It would be like going to Belgium and asking for a Budweiser.

Every major gaming company, and a lot of minor ones, have tables set up for the sole purpose of teaching you how to play their games. Get yourself on the standby list for True Dungeon...I've never had to wait more than half an hour for a slot. Sit down and play an introductory RPG session. Sign up for a class. (Last time I went to GenCon I learned how to make chainmail dice bags.) Or spend half a day exploring downtown Indy.

Even if you do spend the majority of your time playing Warlord...at least devote one day to trying out a few new things.

This.

There are so many things to do at GenCon and to see in Downtown Indy, you shouldn't have trouble occupying your time.

Seriously...the wife and i had a great time at Indy. We only came by and hung out with the Warlord crowd once in awhile. There's a lot to see and do and try out. I spent just all day Friday demoing new games in the dealer hall...I'm still amazed I was able to cart off so much! :)
