Re: [Hordes/Warmachine] The Elephant in the Room
Anyone use base inserts for the round lipped bases that come with the Hordes/Warmachine line? I'm thinking about getting some from Ironhalo possibly these Southern Sandsor Valhallaor KeepNormally, for GW games I just use sand followed by some flock or static grass. Currently I could get base inserts for everything I own (and probably will own for a decent bit once I pick up Hexeris and the Praetorian Swordsmen) for like $36 + Shipping. That's not terrible and I like the idea of the Valhalla but I think the Norse style runes might conflict with the Skorne style. Leaning towards Southern Sands or Keep.

Re: [Hordes/Warmachine] The Elephant in the Room
I bought the bayou ones form Malifaux for my gators but I need to find some different ones because the repetition is kinda annoying.
I also dropped $$ on a Menoth army which is my first foray into the focus side of the game. Now just to buy a Khador box and I can start my PG application.

Re: [Hordes/Warmachine] The Elephant in the Room
I ended up going with Forgotten Empires full resin bases from Dragon Forge Designs. They should look awesome for my Skorne. Oh and Hexeris and a full Praetorian Swordsmen with Unit Attachement have been added to my collection, along with a Basilisk Drake and Supreme Archdomina Makeda.

Re: [Hordes/Warmachine] The Elephant in the Room
Those do look pretty awesome and should fit your Skorne well. I got the Bayou Base inserts from Wyrd for my Gremlin Crew, works better than the Gators probably because there are more small-base variants than the medium- and large-base ones (there is only 1 large base variant). So the repetition wasn't so bad.

The bases came in. They look better in person than they do online. I highly recommend anyone who plays mini games consider using Dragon Forge Designs for their bases.

Re: [Hordes/Warmachine] The Elephant in the Room
Dragon forge is pretty awesome, i've been getting their bases for years. One of the things about them, over other bases, is that while they are detailed, they are not overly cluttered or detailed like other bases...imo =)

Re: [Hordes/Warmachine] The Elephant in the Room
pffft. make your own. only thing I was ever good at with minis was sculpting. I could sculpt like the wind and paint pictures in my sleep, but I was a n00b when it came to mini painting. So I had to trade off a bunch of work to someone to paint my figs. Had a guy paint 4000 points of chaos dwarves I bought and I sculpted an entire Skaven terrain for him, complete with cess pools and tunnels. He flocked and painted that too, of course

Darguth,
One of my friends is considering Khador for his first foray into Warmachine/Hordes. He likes the Epic Vladimir model so what can you tell me about that Warcaster and what he should purchase?

Re: [Hordes/Warmachine] The Elephant in the Room
Hrm, I don't remember a lot about his spell list off the top of my head other than the fact that he doesn't get "Signs & Portents" like the Prime version of Vladimir does (which is that version's defining spell basically).
His basic playstyle will allow eVlad to be a front-line caster that can lay down a pretty solid world of hurt, especially after he takes some damage. He basically is a little angry wolverine, the more he gets poked and prodded (i.e. the more he suffers damage) the better his base stats become. IIRC too, he has some way to heal after suffering the damage but he loses his bonuses PERMANENTLY if you deal damage to him with a friendly model.
One great model that he can run is Drago. eVlad, pVlad, and Karchev are basically the only guys that can really make use of him. And he's a really awesome model with some solid stats and abilities. I own Drago, but no caster to use him, and he's cool enough I'm considering getting the caster just so I can run him.
If he's at all interested in Tier/Theme lists I think both versions of Vlad focus on Iron Fang units (Pikemen and Uhlans) as well as possibly Berserkers.
I'll look at his spell lists and abilities again more closely tonight and put together a better list of suggestions than these at that point, but that's a basic summary of his playstyle and one clear suggestion on a starting Jack to consider. Also, both the IFP and IFU are solid units to start with, as is the character IFU. So if he likes the models they're a good way to go because they're solid on their own and can be used in a Theme list should he ever desire.

Re: [Hordes/Warmachine] The Elephant in the Room
OK, got my book in front of me; will provide some better commentary on eVlad. Bear in mind I have not played him personally, so this is mostly theoretical conjecture based on my experiences as a whole.
Feat: Gives d3+3 Warrior models in his CTRL area +3 SPD, STR, MAT, RAT, DEF, ARM, and CMD. This is, obviously, a great buff for any infantry unit. However, I'd particularly look at the Great Bears of Gallowswood to buff offensively. These guys are ****ing incredible already. Give them +3 SPD, STR, and MAT and they're downright stupid-good. Additionally this could work well with Kayazy Assasins + UA to get off an assassin run. The RAT bonus could be used well with the WG Mortar or WG Infantry, though if you bring Kovnik Joe that bonus isn't as necessary. I feel this is likely better used for buffing a melee unit than a ranged unit. Defensively you could make MoW Shocktroopers or Iron Fang Pikemen nearly unkillable with +3 DEF and ARM.
Abilities:
Blood Trials: Each time eVlad takes damage he gets a blood token. In the next Control Phase he converts these into Focus, before allocation occurs.
Defensive Strike: OPT, when an enemy advances into your melee range you get a free normal attack against them.
Might of Kings: When eVlad takes 1+ damage for the first time he gets +1 SPD, STR, DEF, and CMD. This goes up to +2/3 when he drops to 10/5 damage boxes remaining.
Weapon: Reach, Magical Weapon, gets +1 dmg die against Undead.
Spells:
Assail: Upkeepable Warjack buffs, gives them free Slam and Trample power attacks and they get +2" movement when performing them. Models Slammed by the model move +2" as well. This is great for any Warjacks with Bulldoze on them already, as they can more easily perform Tramples, meaning the Spriggan or Devastator. Also the Marauder's Combo Smite special slam attack works well with this for position purposes.
Hand of Fate: Target friendly Faction model/unit gets +1 die on attack and damage rolls, discard the lowest. Upkeepable. Choose your favorite offensive model/unit and go to town, obviously works great with everything. Weaker version of "Sings & Portents" from pVlad.
Martial Paragon: Self-buff, upkeepable, gains +1 die on melee attack rolls and cannot be targeted for free strikes.
Razor Wind: Basic staple Khador ranged spell, single-target. Nothing special.
Transference: Self-buff, upkeepable, models in eVlad's CTRL area can spend 1 focus to boost melee attack and damage rolls during their activations.
Wind Blast: Places an AOE template that can dispel Clouds and gives a -3 RAT debuff to any models inside. Great for general anti-range uses and situationally useful against some casters/factions. Won't really dictate your army comp.
OK, so based on all of that here are some things I'd recommend:
Warjacks:
Drago: Vlad's special character 'jack. Focus efficient with ability to run and charge for free, and can get free attacks from a Chain Attack. Gets +1 die on attack and damage rolls, drop the lowest, when in Vlad's CTRL area. Also has a decent anti-jack Critical effect on both of his axes.
Spriggan: Great jack all around, but makes good use of free Tramples and Slams from "Assail" due to his Bulldoze ability (let's him push guys out of his way by up to 2" when he moves into B2B, makes pulling off Tramples easier so you have a legal ending point). Very hard hitting on the charge, good for Jack-busting.
Devastator: Has Bulldoze too, but MUCH more defensively oriented. Would be great for shielding eVlad since he'll need to be in the middle of the action to maximize his wound-triggered abilities.
Marauder: Cheap basic melee 'jack, but it has a combo special attack that counts as a Slam so he gets extra distance on it from the Assail buff.
Units:
Great Bears: Amazing unit by themselves, just spectacular. Buff them with his Feat or "Hand of Fate" and they will rip through anything nearby.
Iron Fang Pikemen: Mobile shield wall unit, good for screening Vlad. Also can make good use of buffage from his Feat, and their Crit: Knockdown can be really helpful which is easier pulled off with an extra die from Hand of Fate or stealing focus via Transference.
Kayazy Assassins: Hard-to-hit melee unit, would excel at going for assassin runs with eVlad's feat, Hand of Fate, and their UA.
Iron Fang Uhlans: I don't recall if cavalry count as warrior models, but I think they do. If so, they make a great shock-and-awe our counter-charge unit with all his melee-oriented buffs.
Greylord Ternion: Great toolbox utility unit. Particularly can provide cloud effects to conceal your melee threats.
Solos:
Manhunter, MoW Drakhun, Fenris, Kovnik Markov: All great melee solos eVlad can buff. Manhunter is like a cruise missile; the Drakhun and Fenris are one-man-armies; and Markov supports Iron Fang Uhlans if you go with them.
War Dog: Almost a must for eVlad I think. Great, cheap, bodyguard unit. He'll need this in the thick of things.
Outside of those he could look at the Ogrun Bokur and some mercenary called Goran or something that provides cloud effects I think. Either of those might be decent defensive deterrents to keep eVlad safe.
Also, if he wants, his theme force allows Drago, any other non-character warjacks, Iron Fang units (pikemen and uhlans), Kossite Woodsmen (blah), Widowmakers (solid and cheap, he doesn't make them any better/worse), the War Dog and Iron Fang solos (which means Kovnik Markov only).
And of course there are other more specialized strategies, but these are just basic ideas.

Re: [Hordes/Warmachine] The Elephant in the Room
Ya, just doing this summary basically convinced me to get him He looks like a lot of fun, a lot different than eIrusk, and he'll let me run Drago and some Uhlans which will be nice. Definitely gonna get Harkevich too, so I'll have an Infantry-buffing caster, a Warjack-buffing caster, and then a beatstick Hybrid-support caster if I get eVlad. Sounds like a good mix.

Re: [Hordes/Warmachine] The Elephant in the Room
Thanks for the help.
I'm going to suggest a 35 point list for him featuring
eVlad Spriggan - 10 Devastator - 9 Ironfang Pikemen (MAX + UA) - 10 Kayazy Assassins (MAX + UA) - 10 War Dog - 1
That should be pretty solid right?
